Paper Abstract:      COMPASS is a discipline-independent adaptive concept mapping learning environment, which aims to support the learning process and assess student’s understanding. With COMPASS, students have the possibility to work out various concept mapping activities, which employ different concept mapping tasks. Furthermore, the analysis of students’ maps and the application of an assessment scheme for the qualitative and quantitative estimation of their knowledge are supported. In this work, we present the analysis and the evaluation processes implemented in COMPASS as well as a study conducted in the context of the formative evaluation of the environment, aiming to investigate students’ opinion about the specific facilities and the feedback provided. The report of this study includes positive aspects of the design and recommendations for further improvement of the underlying processes.
